Around four out of five Australians who have asthma also have allergies. Allergies tend to run in families, but family members may not have the same response. Allergies occur when a person’s immune system reacts to substances (allergens) that are harmless to most people. The triggers can affect breathing, skin, eyes or the whole body. Common allergy triggers include dust mites, mould, pets, pollen and smoke.
